The Pleasanton Unified School District (PUSD) Board of Trustees unanimously passed a resolution declaring June 2021 “LGBTQ+ Pride” Month at its May 20 board meeting.
“I’d like to kick off this resolution and say thank you to our teachers and our classified staff who support our students through some difficult times as they navigate their growing up in high school and spreading their wings off into when they graduate and move on,” Board President Joan Laursen said during the May 20 meeting. “And so thank you very much for your support of all of our students.”
The resolution was passed to show the District’s support for the acceptance and inclusion of all students and staff, as well as honor the variety of celebrations recognizing Pride Month around the nation and state of California.
“My heart is bursting at the seams with gratitude today. I can’t overstate how strongly my family and I support this resolution,” said PFLAG Director at Large and PUSD parent Donalyn Harris during public comment. “Passing an official resolution is a powerful statement leaving none to wonder whether they belong in the PUSD community. You bringing this resolution tonight is action that makes the world better and safer for our kids and families.”
PUSD will fly LGBTQ+ Pride flags at its district office and school campuses throughout the month of June.
