PUSD Congratulates Village High School teacher Mario Hurtado as 2017-2018 Teacher of the Year

The Pleasanton Unified School District (PUSD) is proud to congratulate Mario Hurtado, U.S. History, Economics, and Leadership teacher at Village High School, as the 2017-2018 PUSD Teacher of the Year.

Mr. Hurtado has been teaching in PUSD at Village High School since 2012. He is known at Village for his warmth and charisma with his students and strong support and leadership among his fellow teachers. Serving PUSD's at-promise students at Village, Mario works tirelessly to inspire and instill a passion for learning in all of his students.

“He makes every day meaningful. Students look forward to going to his class because he inspires them to learn,” said Village High School Principal Dana Chavez. “He sets the bar high for every student and himself. He’s transformative; when students come out of his class they are different people.”

Mr. Hurtado is beloved by his students for the passion and positivity he brings to the classroom.

“Mario is incredibly positive 24/7. He is someone that’s really helped me get out of my bubble,” said Village High School student Mariah Raygoza “It’s cool to come into class every day to be excited. You feel really happy to be in his class, it’s hard not to.”

His passion for learning fuels Mr. Hurtado’s belief in modeling positive behaviors in his classroom. Mr. Hurtado partners with his students in the learning process by completing every assignment and test he gives in his class.

“Learning needs to be a shared experience. I teach to help students meet their maximum potential,” said Hurtado.  “If I want them to meet their maximum potential, I need to continue to meet mine.”

Mr. Hurtado’s commitment to his students and to education stretches beyond the classroom. Every month he organizes trips for his students and Village staff to GLIDE memorial church to help serve food to the hungry. He also participates in PUSD’s mariachi program, learning to play bass with other students who were playing an instrument for the first time.

Mario's name will be submitted to the Alameda County Office of Education for the county's Teacher of the Year program.
