Elementary Boundary Adjustments
During their March 23 meeting, the Board of Trustees took action to adjust elementary school boundaries to help balance student enrollment. This was the first time in over 20 years this has happened, and we knew that it would be a difficult decision.
We would like to thank the hundreds of individuals and families who participated in this important process.
The Board voted in favor of scenario 4, which is pictured below. Families can view an interactive map to Zoom in and view street view level here (select ‘Scenario 4 in ‘Layer Level’ menu to view the correct scenario).
In the image below and in the interactive map linked above, current boundaries are outlined in black — new approved elementary school boundaries are reflected in color (see legend on the left of image below).
Trustees also approved the procedures for how the boundary adjustment process will be implemented. Please review the information below for TK-8 students.
After July 1, 2023 all new students enrolled in PUSD will be assigned to their new residential boundary school.
Transitional Kindergarten/Kindergarten Enrollment
- For 2023-24, students currently enrolling in TK and K for the fall of 2023, will enroll in their current residential school
- Beginning July 1, 2023, new TK and K students will be assigned to their new residential school
- Families will be notified and offered to move to the new school of residence, based on the new boundary and dependent on space availability
Grades 1-5 Current PUSD Students
- Students attending an elementary school in grades 1-5 will continue at that elementary school through Grade 5
- Younger siblings will be allowed to enroll in the same school as the older sibling, as long as the older sibling is a current student
- If the older sibling is no longer enrolled at the school site at the time the sibling enrolls, the younger sibling would be enrolled in their new resident school
- A student that the district has overflowed to another school will have first priority to return to their resident school, if and when a seat opens
- Families will be notified and offered to move to the new school of residence, based on the new boundary and dependent on space availability
Grades 6-8 Current PUSD Students
- In 2024-25, rising 6th grade students may apply for an Open Enrollment transfer to their original resident middle school, before the boundary adjustment became official, and special consideration will be given to those families, based on space availability
- Starting in 2025-26, rising 6th grade students will attend the middle school in the new boundary
- If families would like to attend their “old” boundary school, they may apply through the Open Enrollment process
- Sibling rule applies to the middle school changes. Younger siblings will be allowed to enroll in the same school as the older sibling, as long as the older sibling is a current student
- Students continuing in the Dual Language Immersion program will matriculate through PMS and Foothill HS
Other Factors
- For families that have enrolled in PUSD prior to the Boundary Adjustment approval, they will be able to request a change in enrollment to the current school of residence through the “Boundary Adjustment School Request Change Form.” Eligible families will be notified that they may apply through the Boundary Adjustment Request Process. The Boundary Adjustment Change Request Form will be made available at the time this notification is received. Approvals are dependent on space availability.
- If families would like to attend a school outside of their new residential boundaries, they can apply for an Open Enrollment/Intradistrict Transfer. The process and procedures are linked here. Guidelines and requirements for open enrollment requests are outlined in PUSD Board Policy 5116.1 and Administrative Regulation 5116.1: Intradistrict Open Enrollment.
